A crafts mela organised by Swayambhar Nari at Y.W.C.A Secunderabad, showcases crafts from Bengal.

Swayambhar (self reliant) Nari (non formal action research institute) is a non profit organisation.

S. Bhadra, the founder-secretary along with some friends started Swayambhar at a time when government help was not easily available for self-help groups. The idea behind the group was to make women self-reliant and economically independent and win the confidence of the artisans based in villages and provide them with exposure so that they could reach out to other regions to spread their art.

"Swayambhar Nari was started essentially for women but over the years the male craftsmen too have joined,"

The first thing to strike the eye is the scores of artifacts that appear to look like framed paintings. But a closer look reveals they are not. They are images given life with thread work on handmade paper and framed in wood and glass.

Each embroidered kurtas is a unique and different piece. Intricate and neat hand embroidery like kanta, ari and other kinds of stitches make this cotton, tussar and silk kurtas stand apart.

Sharmishtha Mukherjee necklaces using beads with chunky pendants are also light on the purse.
